After you complete your initial periodontal treatment it is crucial that you continue to meet with our periodontist to receive supportive periodontal treatments. Also known as periodontal maintenance, this care helps prevent the return of the disease to your mouth, allowing you to maintain better oral and overall health as you continue to recover.

Periodontal maintenance is a crucial aspect of your ongoing oral health care after you have been diagnosed with gum disease. As gum disease is a degenerative condition primarily caused by the accumulation of bacteria in plaque on your teeth, it can lead to severe consequences if left untreated. While gum disease is not entirely curable, it can be effectively managed through proper treatment and maintenance. Our skilled periodontist offers this regular maintenance to continue to combat gum disease and prevent detrimental effects on your oral health, including tooth loss, gum loss and bone loss.

Periodontal maintenance involves regular visits to our office, usually once every three months. The reason for scheduling periodontal maintenance every three months is based on the bacterial lifecycle. Within three to 12 weeks, periodontal bacteria tend to flourish if biofilm is noy adequately removed. By providing a thorough cleaning every 12 weeks, or three months, these harmful bacteria can be eliminated, effectively keeping the condition under control.

During these appointments, a comprehensive cleaning is performed both above and below the gumline. This process aims to remove plaque, tartar (hardened plaque known as dental calculus) and harmful bacteria, preventing the condition from worsening.
